HP Envy Touchsmart - please wait message on red background will not go away

HP Envy Touchsmart 15-j024sa Notebook PC

8.0 trying to get 8.1

 

Bought from John Lewis on Sunday and it worked fine for the first day. downloaded and installed Windows updates  and the 8.1 and the screen gets blocked out with a red banner saying 'Please wait' with and cancel button. Nothing happens (for hours) and the cancel button does not work. Reset the laptop using the F8 and remove all files and tried again. Same thing has happened. Reset for the third time, this time we uploaded and intsalled the HP updates (bios etc) which it asked for - and yet again it has become unusable. Love the spec of this machine and this is for my sons six form computing but has been nothing but trouble.

 

Please help
