HP ENVY 15-j171nr Notebook (ENERGY STAR)
Product number: E7Z54UA#ABA
Windows 8.1 Update Pro 64-bit
This is a brand new (fast!) machine, i7, with an SSD HD booster, received directly from HP last week. Fully-patched through Windows 8.1 Update Pro. This bug is particularly annoying, because the system has to reboot and report to Microsoft in the process.
The blue screen itself does specify an error:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
Incidentally, I have the same exact issue with an earlier ENVY notebook, the HP Envy m6. For what it's worth, that system was made well before Microsoft issued Windows 8.1 Update, a couple of months ago. Prior to that update, this issue did not occur on the m6. Immediately following that update, it began occurring, and has continued to this day. On the m6, the effect is worse though, because it takes forever to boot unlike the Envy 15. I was able to pull an error log transcript for the m6, and will attempt to do the same for the 15.
