I just bought the laptop

all that i have installed is Vlc media player and yahoo messenger. I noticed it moving slower than I expected but I attributed that to my being accustomed to my desktop speeds. But whenever the laptop sleeps I am unable to to wake it. I have to hold down the power button to shut it off then restart it....which itself takes some time. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
