IE11 update causes critical error

Greetings,

Several times since Dec 12, uSoft has pushed IE11 to my HP G71, and the update has repeatedly failed.  I noticed a dependency on the IE11 log file -  KB2729094 - which is missing.  Mutliple Windows Update attempts to install IE11 since Dec 12 have caused a critical error shutdown, as below, requiring a System Restore to make the laptop functional again.

To help isolate this, I performed a direct install of IE11 from the uSoft website, which results in a 'WIndows has encountered a critical error, and will shut down in one munute.  Please save your work' error message'.  The only way to resume operation is a system restore, to an earlier date, which brings things back to normal.  No other problems are noted.  The machine then runs for days with no complaints, hibernating and waking up just fine.

What in the heck is going on?  Short of a full Windows install - which requires a wipe of all the data files - how to resolve this error.  It is unsual, because it is so repeatable.  There must be a troubleshooter or something, because the only program which causes this is IE11.
