Pointer gets stuck while everything else works fine

I have recently bought a HP Pavallion 15 - N012TX laptop and have been facing a consistent problem. The system is slower than I expected since with an i5 processor I had higher expectations. But the bigger problem is that the pointer freezes often for some seconds. I have tried reinstalling, updating the driver but to no avail. Can anyone suggest something to solve this?
PS: The mouse uses Synaptics Software
