surface pro 2

Hi,

I have an HP Photosmart 5520 printer that has worked fine in the past. I purchased a Surface Pro 2 (Windows 8.1, 64-bit) and have been able to print just fine, but now I need to scan a document to pdf. I went to re-install the HP software/driver so I could change the scan output to pdf, but the software wont install properly. It doesn't give me any errors, but when I try to run the software my whole system gets buggy, the display starts to freeze and freak out, and the computer eventually freezes. I'm afraid it's going to kill my computer. I've tried uninstalling everything HP-related, including the network printer, and re-installing the software/driver combo several times and every time it's the same result. Once I restart (or force shut down) my computer runs fine, until I try to run the HP software again... at which point my computer starts to freak out again.

I've been downloading the Windows 8.1 64-bit software/driver from here:

.... Although that server seems to be experiencing an error right now.
