How We Got Here

I was helping a friend with a computer issue (a possible follow-up post, but first things first), and part of a suggested fix for that problem was to remove windows media player, so that it can be added back again.  It should also be noted that these is a computer that rarely gets restarted.

In any case, the computer started shutting down, and it began applying an update.  After a few minutes, it stopped at 30%, and after about 30 minutes, they turned off the machine.  Then when the machine began to boot up, it immediately went to the screen saying

“Configuring Windows updates
100% complete
Do not turn off your computer”

Again, it hung on this screen for a long time with no change.  Eventually, we restarted it, and attempted to boot into safe mode with f8, with no success.

As far as I can tell, with this windows 8 machine, it’s not so easy to get into safe mode.

My friend had a potential boot disk, and we tried starting with the boot disk in the drive, but it didn’t make any difference.

Right now, I told him to just let it sit on this screen overnight, in the hopes it will eventually get through.

If I could somehow just get the thing into windows proper, that would be a huge improvement.

Thank you in advance.   If you need any additional information, ask and I will see what i can provide.
