sudden problem with HP Pavillion dv6-2157wm laptop

Hi.  About 2 weeks ago, my laptop (an HP Pavillion dv6 model) was working fine.  It was plugged into the power cord and AC adapter at the time.  One day, I  went to check my e-mails and the laptop suddenly acted like it was restarting, then it shut off completely.

I waited a couple minutes to turn the laptop back on, but it wouldn't turn on at all.  I unplugged the power cord and plugged it back into the power cord slot on the computer, but the light next to the power cord slot didn't turn on like it normally does when plugged in.

Also, when I pushed the on/off button to turn my laptop back on, it didn't turn on.  Instead, a light in the very front of the laptop (under the lightning bolt symbol) flashed 3 times and then stopped flashing.  I took the battery out and put it back in after a couple seconds, but it still wouldn't turn on.

I did notice that the power cord box was fairly warm when the laptop shut down suddenly, as was the laptop (despite using a laptop fan to cool the laptop bottom off). The power cord model number is WASGV0CL9YIVCU.

What is going on with my laptop?  I use this device to do my lay ministry work and need it to work ASAP!  I don't know whether its the power cord that broke or the battery needs to be replaced.  I bought the laptop in early 2010 and have kept it in good condition since then.  Please help!!

Jessie
