Failure to configure windows updates reverting changes

Hello,
I have the hp envy m6 and yesterday it attempted to carry out windows updates and seemed to complete them but then restarted and was stuck on the 'failure to configure windows updates reverting changes do not turn off computer screen'. It sat like this overnight and this morning I actually restored the laptop through pressing the esc key upon start up as i couldn't do anything else with it. It then appeared to be working fine for an hour before attempting windows updates again. It has now been sat on the same screen for a couple of hours and I have no idea what to do next?
