HP G62-b18SA persistant shutting down

Hi,

I've had my G62 since roughly december 2010 but it has recently started to unexpectedly shut down without warning.

It is worth noting the following;

- It does not have a battery in but has been plugged into the mains for the best part of 2 years without issue.

- I recently replaced the charger as the last one just stopped working altogther. (This was confirmed broken by using my brothers charger who has the exact same model).

- Since replacing the charger I can now power the laptop on. However it just instantly turns off (every time) after different time periods. Sometimes I reach windows, sometimes it takes a second.

- Temps are fine, I managed to quickly check HWmonitor at one point!

My guess is i've bought a dud charger and its just not giving the laptop enough juice to stay alive.

I don't really know what my next option is. Buy a new battery and see if I get the shutdowns with a charged battery and no charger in? Is the CPU fried? Or is this a common problem with an easy fix? (Fingers crossed!)

Any help or insight is hugely appreciated as my patience is starting to wear awfully thin!
