Pavilion DV6 lags regularly except when I take the battery out

I have a Pavilion DV6-1199ee notebook with windows 8.1 pro 64bit version. A couple of months ago or so my laptop started lagging greatly after switching between battery and AC power. Som webpages would stop responding and if I'm watching a video, it would start playing almost frame by frame. If I left the laptop a little while without using it (while it's still on) or I restarted it, it would go back to normal. More recently though, even leaving it aside for a while stopped working much. Then I found the only way I could stop it immediately without restarting, and that's by removing the battery entirely.

So, basically, if I was using the battery and then connected the charger, it would lag; if I was using the charger and then switched to battery, it would lag. When it IS lagging, if I take the charger out, no change, but if I take the battery out and leave the AC adapter, it would go back to normal. If I put back the battery, it would start lagging again immediately.

At first it used to only happen when switching between battery and AC, as I mentioned above, but lately it started happening after a few hours of use without having to switch or so. Now, I've tried changing both the battery and the adapter and I've tried to re-install windows, but nothing made any difference.

Although I don't remember making any software changes before the issue started immediately, but a while before that I had upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 and since then almost always after I connect the charger (while having been using it on battery i.e. not turned off), it wouldn't change the power icon to display the plug as supposed to and whatever power settings I have would remain as if I was using the battery power; nonetheless, it would charge normally and would keep working if I take out the battery. I'm not sure if that's related though.

It's been driving me crazy and I haven't found anyone or anything online or otherwise that gives me any clue about what the problem really is and how do I fix it.
