Icons Won't React

Greetings.

I am using an HP Paviliondv7 Notebook PC (product # LW170UA#ABA.)

Of late, I have been having problems getting the icons in the lower tool bar to react when I click them on.  They appear to just be frozen.  I end up having to go to "Task Manager" and 'end program', shut down and restart the computer just to get the icons to work.  Sometimes this takes several tries.

Other times, the icons on the desk top do the same - freeze

There is no ryhme or reason as to when or why this occurs.

I though maybe the 'hard drive - primary' (the one with the OS on it - was going bad, but doing a HP test [HP support attendant - the f10 key when first starting the computer]) says that both drives and memory is "OK".  I run Norton Suite anti virus constantly and it finds no mal ware.  I use the HP Support Attendant to defrag and clean up.  I use "Systems Mechanic Pro" for computer maintenance as well - all reporting "OK".

My next step was to just reinstall the "Microsoft OS" only from the 'recovery', but I am leary as I have never used that and really don't want to loose (have to re-install) all programs and lose data.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
