hp dvd6 hanging

I have a HP dv6 laptop, Intel core i3 cpu; 2.4 GHz processor. 4 GBytes ram, running Windows 7 Home Premium. Run for two years with no problems until:

Following re-installation of windows 7 (after corrupt user profile that couldn't be shifted) the laptop freezes randomly during normal, light use.

I've run (from BIOS) hard drive and memory checks - OK.

I've run malware/spyware checks OK.

I've run the System File Checker tool (from command prompt) - OK.

I've run various other checks, all reported OK.

The laptop doesn't appear to be overheating (I've cleaned vents etc).

I've reset a second time, with no sign of improvement.

On both occasions, all ms and hp updates were applied before re-installing any other programmes or files from back-ups.

I've also manually checked drivers for updates where possible. Oddly, the laptop never froze during the, presumably, fairly heavy use whilst updates were downloaded/applied.

Prior to resetting to 'factory settings' the laptop was perfectly OK apart from a corrupt user profile that I could not clear.

Additionally, I had created a set of back-up dvds (when all was well with it), but they will NOT work. When the system restarts and the (last) dvd is inserted, all I get is a 'No Image found' message.

After reading various, similar reports on this, and other, forums I've come to the conclusion that there is a software problem somewhere, but it eludes me and apparently other users of this product, as well, it seems, as HP themsleves.

Sorry this is a long post and, if you reach the end thank you for your patience, but I am now getting quite p****d off with the machine and desperate for a solution.

PS. I don't get any warning this is about to happen. No 'blue screen', error messages etc it just freezes. I have to use the power off button. The only error log message shown is 'windows was not properly shut down' with the usual startup options. It then runs ok until it decides it's had enough again.
