HP G62 hangs on starting Windows but only Windows

Hi

I have a G62 with the ATi GPU and it refuses to boot Windows 7 from the hard disk or from a USB boot disk.

My first thought was a dodgy hard disk so I removed it and then tried again to boot Windows 7 from a DVD and a USB installer but both just hang at Starting Windows with no hard disk installed!

I have changed the memory, used just one memory module in both slots and that made no difference.

If I try and boot a Linux live CD (i.e Backtrax) or Hirens MiniXP via USB there is no problem at all, it just won't load Windows 7 from media that works fine on any other computer.

I tried running the HP Windows 7 in safe mode and noticed that it hangs on 'atipcie64.sys' which has been talked about in other posts. However trying the few solutions that were not posted by people assuming you are a plank didn't help either.

I wondered if the ATI chipset had cracked it's BGA joints but I am not keen to reflow it as ATI rarely suffers from this almost exclusive in laptops Nvidia issue. Not only that but Linux live seems to have no issues in configuring the display in as many resolutions as it can perform.

A real head jar this one. Any of you folks got a Scooby Doo whats going on here?
