After being idle, laptop refuses to start

I am using an HP 2000 Notebook Pc with Windows 8 installed. After using it for a little while and closing the lid, leaving it like that for about an hour or two, I come back to open the lid.  When I open it back up, my lock screen flashes on, as usual. However, no matter if I click it, don't click it, or manage to go fast enough to get to typing, it will go to a black screen, the fan stops, and the power light turns off. It acts in a sort of idle-mode still, so if I move the mouse, the lock screen will reappear. It does the same thing again and again if I move the mouse to start it, and I have found that the only way to solve the issue is restarting the laptop manually.

Can someone please help me? I got my laptop last Christmas (2013), and I've been having this problem occasionally since then.

(Note, this problem only happens after the laptop has been closed and is still on for some time; if I closed it for 5 minutes and then opened it, this wouldn't happen.)
