Blue screen upon wakeup

I am a (proud) owner of an HP Envy m6-1178sa, running Windows 8. A couple of weeks ago, this laptop was encountering a problem with KERNELBASE.dll which caused the screen to flash whenever I tried to open File Explorer or Command Prompt (as administrator). Following advice from a technician, I reformatted the system. Since then, I have used HP Support Assistant to install the latest version of all my drivers. I am now encountering a problem with the laptop as sometimes, not always, when I wake it up from sleep mode I receive a blue screen which says PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA. This only ever happens when waking up from sleep mode; it happens at no other point at which I am using the laptop. I know that updating the drivers had no effect on this as I received this bluescreen once before updating them. I was not receiving this error before reformatting the system. Something that may or may not be related to this problem is the fact that Windows Update is reporting that the majority of the updates it is trying to install fail to install. Some succeed, but most fail.

Pearls of wisdom, anyone?
