lockup problem on a pavilion g4 laptop

I am working on a friends HP Pavilion g4-1125dx laptop, os win7.   Right out of the gate when the laptop is powered up it pops up with a blue bar asking for a password (it isn't a windows password bar).  I looked up online for the correct cmd to get into the bios.  It is    F10.  But I can't get into the bios,  I can't boot around that blue bar to start windows. nothing works.  I tried pulling the hard drive to see if I could get the laptop to say "can't boot, no bootable drive installed".  With the hard drive out, nothing in the cd-rom drive and nothing else like a flash drive pluged in.  I powered up the laptop and got the same blue password bar.  How do I reset the bios to default without taking the hole laptop apart to pull the bios battery?
