short dst 1 failid harddisk

Compaq presario cq56-129nr   hangs either silently or sometimes with a loud buzzing noise. Ran recovery startup test and received error code  for short dst    failid harddisk 1         9fwk1h-5hn727-xd003       product u683ua#aba

the pc of course is not under warranty,   any ideas, can we attempt to repair rather then replace the drive??
