Cannot remove my thumb drive safely

I am not certain that this is the appropriate post for this forum, but I did not know where else to post.

It seems like every week I have a new issue with my laptop!

I have a 4-5 year old HPG50-126NR laptop. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, 32-bit, with Service Pack 2. Yesterday I needed to work on a few documents from my SanDisk thumb drive. I did so without any problem.

However, now I can't remove the Thumb Drive safely. When I click on the green check mark in the lower right tray, it then says "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - Drive G. When I click on it, a pop up says:

"Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because it is in use. Close and programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later".

Well, all programs and windows are closed to my knowledge. At least, I can see none open. My guess is the thumb drive is hung up by some window (maybe Firefox is running in the background) or program that is attaching itself to the Thumb Drive, but I have no way to know. I can try sutting down, but I am concerned about the documents on the Thumb Drive.

Any ideas what to do or the best forum I can ask.

Thanks.

Anovice
